NEW ORLEANS, La. (NBC News) – Authorities say a 45-year-old Housing Authority officer was found shot to death inside his patrol car.

According to a statement from the New Orleans Police Department, the officer was patrolling a construction site just blocks from the New Orleans Saints’ stadium when he was fatally shot.

“It’s a horrible day for us. It’s truly said. This was a young officer who was taken way too soon,” said Chief Robert Anderson.

So far, no arrests have been made and authorities have not identified any suspects in the case.

NBC News reports that the officer had worked with the Housing Authority since 2013.

He is the first Housing Authority of New Orleans officer to be killed in the line of duty.
