Norman police detectives have identified the male wounded Saturday during an officer-involved shooting as Jimmie Alfred Wheeler, age 44.

Investigators have learned that medical personnel may release Wheeler from OU Medical Center Sunday.

If released from the hospital, Norman police will take Wheeler to the Cleveland County Detention Center, where he will be held pending a charge of eluding a police officer.

NORMAN, Okla. - Bullets flew during a high speed chase through Norman sending one man to the hospital.

A 911 call about a suspicious vehicle in the 2500 168th avenue NE sent officers responding and things got even more suspicious when they arrived.

"Once they got there a vehicle that matched the description of the suspicious car began to flee," Capt. Tom Easley said.

The car took off, speeding down E. Rockcreek Rd.

But the chase hit a dead end at 192nd avenue, East of Norman and a little further than investigators would have liked.

"Apparently to make bad situations worse, this is Pottawatomie County and it is also tribal land,” says Capt. Easley. “So were going to jump through some hoops here."

Now, they're conducting an investigation in someone else’s jurisdiction.

Officials aren’t telling us what the suspect did to make gunfire necessary.

"Obviously we don't encourage anyone to run from the police but for whatever reason this fellow decided to,” says Capt. Easley. “Which is never a good idea especially if you're not familiar with the roads and you don't know where you're going this one obviously pretty much dead ends right here."

The suspect was transported to OU Medical from the scene.

No word on his condition yet.

The authorities involved have been placed on routine administrative leave.
