MOUNDS, Okla. – Authorities say a mother and father were arrested after their 4-month-old son went into cardiac arrest.

A doctor treating the infant told an agent with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation that the boy suffered from starvation and was in very critical condition.

Officials say the child was emaciated and would have to have been “deprived of food for quite some time” in order to be so thin.

OSBI agents say the little boy  is the youngest of five children.

The parents told authorities that they didn’t have much money to purchase food and had to cut back on the infant’s formula.

The child’s mother, Amanda Haynes, admitted that she had never taken the boy to medical appointments or wellness checks.

Inside the couple’s home, officials say they found only spoiled milk in the refrigerator.

Amanda and Cody Haynes now face one felony count of child abuse and four felony counts of child neglect.

Experts say the 4-month-old will likely stay in the hospital for weeks.
