PURCELL, Okla. - There are disturbing allegations, involving a high school coach.

The Purcell School District along with police in Garden City, Kansas are investigating an inappropriate text message allegedly sent to a student during a recent tournament.

The allegations happened over the weekend, and the coach has since turned in his resignation.

The marquee sign outside the school still displays the announcement of the basketball tournament in Garden City, Kansas.

However, what allegedly happened there forced one coach’s resignation.

School officials tell NewsChannel 4 “We’ve been made aware of an inappropriate text message that violated our district policy that our basketball coach sent to a current student. Upon notification and an internal investigation, we alerted the police of the situation.”

"They'd had a report of some inappropriate behavior while the high school basketball team was attending a tournament in Kansas,” said Purcell Police Detective Scott Stephens.

Purcell police then interviewed the alleged victim after school officials contacted them Monday afternoon.

"We took the basic information and determined that none of the inappropriate allegations had occurred in Purcell, and I contacted the Garden City Police Department and sent the file to them,” Stephens said.

School officials also said “The coach resigned his position with the district effect immediately” and “Our district will continue to cooperate with authorities on their investigation, as the safety of all of our students is of the utmost concern.”

While police said none of the allegations happened in Purcell, they are not ruling out there could be other students involved.

"There's a possibility there is more than one, but it just depends on what Garden City decides to do as far as pursing it,” Stephens said.

Under Oklahoma state law, school districts must notify the Oklahoma State Department of Education involving alleged teacher misconduct of this nature.

NewsChannel 4 contacted the state department of education, and Purcell school officials did notify the state of the issue.

However, because the issue does involve a minor, the school is not releasing any more details or the name of the coach.
