OHP plane goes down during search

BETHEL ACRES, Okla. – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported an OHP aircraft collision Friday shortly after 7 p.m. near State Highway 9, about two miles east of State Highway 102 in Pottawatomie County.

The aircraft pilot, Trooper Dennis Dickens, was assisting Troopers and other law enforcement officials, with a search for an injured person which fled an accident scene on foot into a wooded area.

Dickens is a veteran.

OHP fixed and rotary wing aircraft pilot with many years service flying for
the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The trooper was looking for someone who was injured from a car accident and wandered off.

The National Transportation Safety Board, (NTSB) and Federal Aviation
Administration, (FAA) are investigating details of the aircraft collision.

Trooper Dickens was flown by medical helicopter to an Oklahoma City area
hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

The suspect from the original auto collision is Brent McKenzie, 50-year-old
man from Shawnee, OK.

McKenzie was found and apprehended by law enforcement officers at the scene. He was booked into the Pottawatomie County Jail on the following charges: DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, unsafe lane change and resisting arrest.

McKenzie is being held without bond.

In a strange twist to this story, there was another plane crash 13 years ago Friday involving an aircraft with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

In that case a helicopter hit a power line southwest of Tahlequah. The trooper onboard, Joseph Nicolle, had been on his way to help lawmen in Adair County find a large marijuana field.

The trooper died at the scene of the crash.
