OKLAHOMA CITY — Police made a gruesome discovery earlier this week; officers found several starving and dead horses at a home near SE 179th and Westminster, just south of Lake Stanley Draper.

That discovery led to one man being arrested.

The discovery happened almost by accident after cattle, two llamas and a sick horse recently wandered off the property, forcing an alert neighbor to call police.

“When the officers discovered what property the livestock belonged to, they discovered horses that were extremely malnourished,” Oklahoma City police MSgt. Gary Knight said.

Even more disturbing, inside a large metal barn police found three dead horses.

The property has clearly been abandoned.

To make matters worse, all the feed and water troughs we saw were were empty.

According to the police report, “There was no feed or water stored on the property. Three ponds were completely dried out.”

“It appears the horses and cattle were left to fend for themselves. There was no one living out there and no one was caring for the animals. They were in an extreme state of malnourishment,” Knight said.

Police eventually arrested the owner of the property, 50-year-old Michael Ross, on several counts of failing to care for his animals.

We tried to track down the suspect but the address and phone number provided in the police report turned out to be false.

Still, police said what they found here is a clear case of animal neglect.

“If you’re going to own animals of any kind, the onus is on you to care for them,” Knight said.

As for the animals that survived, one horse and two llamas are being held by Oklahoma City animal control.

Unless a judge orders the animals returned to the owner, they will likely be placed in a new home.
