CARTER COUNTY, Okla. – One Oklahoma sheriff allegedly threatened to fire one of his female employees if she did not continue to have sex with him.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says Carter County Sheriff Milton Anthony, 65, was arrested on a felony bribery complaint Wednesday.
On May 26, 2016, the Carter County District Attorney requested OSBI investigation an allegation that Sheriff Anthony requested a bribe in the form of an illegal sexual relationship with one of his female employees.
According to the victim, the sexual relationship prompted by the sheriff began last summer.
Officials say Anthony agreed to hire the woman’s husband if she had sex with him.
The woman’s husband was, in fact, hired shortly after the sexual contact started.
The sexual contact continued for several months, the OSBI said in a news release.
When the woman tried to end the contact, officials say the sheriff insinuated he would alter her work hours and even fire her and her husband if she did not continue with their agreement.
In April 2016, the woman began saving the sheriff’s texts and recorded a conversation between the two.
Both communications are considered evidence in this bribery case, the OSBI says.
The victim’s attorney released a statement saying: “In a law abiding society, we expect our government officials to abide by the laws they have sworn to uphold. We place our trust in their shared values of honoring the framework and system that we have entrusted them with; and when that trust is breached, order must be restored. I am pleased that OSBI has taken swift action, not only for my client, but also for this community.”
Anthony was booked into the Carter County Jail and later released on a $20,000 bond.
If convicted, Anthony could spend up to 10 years in prison.
