OKLAHOMA CITY — After seeing bare shelves where rounds of ammunition should be, Representative Mike Ritze out of Tulsa wrote letters to Wal-Mart and Academy asking them why they can’t keep their shelves stocked.

In the letter he says “The store manager’s explanations have been that they are not receiving the ammo therefore; they cannot keep it in stock. In order to provide an accurate explanation to my constituents, I would appreciate some clarification as to what the actual circumstance is regarding your lack of stock of ammunition.”

It appears this problem isn’t limited to Tulsa. After sending the letters he says he’s had people from all over the state contact him.

“I guess it’s a problem nationwide,” says Ritze. “People love their guns, they like to shoot, and I like to target practice. When you limit that we want to get to the bottom of it.”

He’s talked to manufacturers who say they are working 24/7 to keep up with the demand so he says it has to be either federal restrictions or hoarding.

Ritze says, “I think it’s all of the above.”

Host of “Firearms Fridays” Lee Matthews says, “I get a lot of phone calls, a lot of literature from people thinking it’s the government buying all the ammunition and not letting us have any!”

Local radio host and gun enthusiast Lee Matthews says it’s not the government and it’s not the manufacturers.

“They’re producing the ammunition as fast as they can. It’s just being swallowed up for unrealistic reasons,” says Matthews. “The reasoning behind that seems to be stretching from a worry of government intervention to well it’s getting hard to find I better stock up as much as I can.”

Matthews did have some advice for consumers. He says you can either buy everything you need and hand load yourself or you can ride the shortage out. He predicts it could be over by the end of the year.
