OKLAHOMA CITY - It’s less than a week from ringing in a new year and one of the biggest celebrations in downtown Oklahoma City is “Opening Night.”

Event organizers expect about 50,000 people to attend.

On Friday, organizers were taking care of final preparations leading up to the big party.

"It's absolutely the biggest event that you can find in this city," said Opening Night Co-Chair Jorge Hernandez.

The Arts Council of Oklahoma City is hosting the New Year celebration, between 10 different venues, 40 bands and of course the countdown with the New Year's Eve ball, a night full of fun for everyone.

"The city gets to the chance to come out and bring in the New Year with family and friends with a night full of activities with families to enjoy," said Hernandez.
The New Year’s Eve ball is 3,000 pounds of steel and has 3,000 lights.
Most places have the ball drop, but not here.

"We don't want to drop the ball in Oklahoma City like other places do. We just want to keep the ball going up as we continue to grow as a city," said Hernandez.
"This is about the 8th year I've done this," said Pierce.

Jim Pierce is one of the people in charge of moving the ball, an annual tradition he looks forward to.

"It's a neat deal we do here now. We're really putting Oklahoma City on the map," said Pierce.

It takes three men and one crane to raise the New Year’s Eve ball on Opening Night.
Then 2014 will be here, another year with another journey for all.
"A safe new year’s, I hope for everybody," said Pierce.

Tickets are on sale now, $8.00 in advance at any 711, Homeland Stores or MidFirst Banks.
