OKLAHOMA CITY – The city is helping you party for the planet offering free, eco-friendly activities as we approach Earth Day.
The fun kicks off March 30 and runs through Earth Day April 22.
March 30 – Open Streets OKC
NW 23rd between Western and Robinson will be vehicle-free from noon to 4 p.m. on March 30 during Open Streets OKC. Open Streets is a free community event that turns major city streets into safe places for people to exercise and play. Families can run, ride bikes, take exercise classes and more. April 5 – Recycle your tires, ammo, computers and pharmaceuticals
Rid your home of unwanted tires, ammo, computers and pharmaceuticals during our special household hazardous waste collection day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 5 at the State Fairgrounds. The collection is open to Oklahoma City residents only. Bring your current water bill stub to prove residency. The event takes place on the south side of the fairgrounds, east of the arena. Sorry, televisions, tires with rims and off-road tires not accepted.
April 12 – Earth Fest
The Earth takes center stage during our free annual eco-celebration from 1 – 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at Martin Park Nature Center, 5000 West Memorial Road. We’re bringing together loads of eco-friendly talks and demos on invasive species, bees, aquapontics and rain barrels. April 12 – Free Shred Day
Shred and recycle your personal documents during Waste Management Recycle America and the Utilities Department’s free Shred Day from 7 a.m. to noon, April 12 at 5519 NW 4th.
April 12 – Lake Overholser and Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge Cleanup
Join the Friends of Lake Overholser and the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge in cleaning up trash and recyclables on Saturday, April 12 as part of OKC Beautiful’s LitterBlitz. Clean-up begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. after a free lunch and prize giveaway. April 22 – Free bus rides
To support Earth Day, METRO Transit is providing ways to reduce your gas bill and carbon footprint by offering free bus rides on Tuesday, April 22. To view bus schedules and routes, visit www.gometro.org or call 235-RIDE (7433) from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for personal trip plans.
Catch rain with a rain barrel
Oklahoma City and the Central Oklahoma Storm Water Alliance (COSWA) are selling rain barrels for just $59. A rain barrel promotes conservation and saves you money on water bills by harvesting rainwater for your garden. Pick up your barrel between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., April 4 and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., April 5 at 1621 S Portland. For more information call 297-1774.
Saturday Morning Sweeps
Neighborhoods and homeowner’s associations can clean up litter, illegal dumping, trees and brush from common areas, greenbelts and medians by scheduling a Saturday Morning Sweep. The City delivers a commercial dumpster, and your neighborhood provides the volunteers. The City will haul off the dumpster and pay disposal fees. Call 297-2464 for details.
