OKLAHOMA CITY-- "We want to leave the world better than when we came." Larry Long talking about the kids at Britton Elementary School in northwest Oklahoma City.
Larry and his wife LaShonda work almost every day as volunteers at the school.
“They're here in the summer, on the weekends, and late at night”, says Teena McKeown, the school employee who nominated the Longs for Pay It Forward.
“They give and give and give. They encourage our students reading. They do a library night, book clubs. Reading competitions. Anything that teachers need. They just give and give and give and we just can’t think of anyone who deserves this more than the Longs," McKeown said.
When we surprised the Longs at the school with the 400 dollar Pay It Forward award from First Fidelity Bank, they were stunned and humbled.
“The state of the world is in a bad place right now,” said Larry. “We know it really does take a village to raise a child and anything we can do to help...that's what we want to do. We're not in it for any other reason but to make sure these kids have the best education and the best opportunities that Oklahoma can give them.”
For LaShonda it’s all about the emotion she feels for the school and the students. “I just love children. I do it for my children, I do it for my grandchildren.. I just love Britton Elementary."
The Long’s grandchildren who were in on the surprise say Larry and LaShonda should spend the 400 dollars on themselves but Larry says he’s going to put the money towards air conditioner improvements at the school. Already once again…Paying It Forward.
Pay It Forward is sponsored by First Fidelity Bank.
