HENNESSEY, Okla. - Shelley Burch is known for helping others in her hometown of Hennessey.

During Red Ribbon Week, she sponsors a pumpkin decorating contest for middle school students.

Around the holiday time, she coordinates an Angel Tree Christmas that gets community members involved with blessing others with gifts.

Shelly then delivers those gifts to families in Hennessey on Christmas Eve.

She also brought the community and school system together for the Middle School Great Race, as a reading rewards party for students.

Those are just a few of the things that got her nominated for Pay it 4Ward by Hennessey Middle School teacher Lexi Strate.

“She sees kids in need and does something about it,” Lexi said. “She makes them feel special by taking pictures of any kid here in the community and posts them on the website. She also helps our elderly in Hennessey with special projects.”

So, the teachers at Hennessey Middle School set up an assembly with all the kids there, plus Shelly.

She thought it was about the students getting an award for a school project, but then NewsChannel 4  showed up with the $400 Pay it 4Ward award provided by First Fidelity Bank.

Shelly was teary eyed when Lexi gave her the money.

“Hennessey is my hometown," Shelly said. “These are our kids. You look around this gym, and I’ve known most of these kids since they were born. I worked with a lot of these kids when I was at the school. It's what we do. You have to do it to keep your hometown home.”

The reward of her good work?

Hugs from students who know Shelly's heart is in Paying it 4Ward.

Pay it 4Ward is sponsored by First Fidelity Bank.
