OKLAHOMA -- An ax wielding teen is behind bars following an unusual attempted robbery.

The young suspect was left begging for his mommy when a determined store clerk fought him off with a can of mace.

"When I saw the ax, I said, 'You need to leave before I shoot you,'" said the store clerk Ali Ait Mahdi.

Swinging the ax around, the suspect hit the store's counter, leaving behind a large gash.

Holding some pepper spray, Ali fought back, spraying the suspect in the face.

"I really sprayed him in the eyes very well," said Ali. "That's when he lost control and started running toward the door."

According to the police report, the suspect Giovanni Davenport came out "crying... throwing up... and calling for his momma."

"I heard that he was crying for his mom, but you know we all have parents and we all have problems, but some of us wake up at 6 a.m. to go to work, and some of us wake up at 1 in the afternoon to rob somebody else. That's life," said Ali.

As luck would have it, when the suspect stumbled outside, he ran into the waiting arms of two FBI agents who saw the crime go down.

"When I came out to see where the thief went, I saw an FBI agent holding a gun, telling the criminal to sit down," said Ali.

While police don't recommend that robbery victims fight with armed suspects, at least in this case only the counter top got hurt and not the clerk.

"The bottom line is we're thankful he was not hurt. We always encourage victims to comply. We want to see them get out alive," said Oklahoma City police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow.

"Situations like that, you fight for yourself for your life. It's instinct," said Ali.

The suspect was taken to jail on a charge of robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon.
