MOORE, Okla. — Police were on the scene of a crash early Wednesday morning after a driver plowed into a homeowner’s garage and then took off.

Just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday morning, police were called to a home near S.E. 4th and Sante Fe in reference to a crash.

“The cop called me and said, ‘Ma’am, are you okay, are you okay?’ I said, ‘What happened?” Rita Patel told News 4.

Even though it left quite a mess, Patel said she didn’t hear a sound.

“He said, ‘Somebody drove in your garage and we are just trying to find out if you’re okay,” said Patel. “I said, ‘Let me see if my kids are okay,’ because I was so panicked.”

Thankfully, they’re all fine.

The house, on the other hand, was left in shambles after the car rammed through a brick wall, crashing into Patel’s garage and hitting a gas line.

“They started telling us, ‘You need to go outside,’ because the gas smell was so strong. So they had to evacuate us,” Patel said.

Not too long after that, Patel says she was approached by a neighbor.

“He said they are going through a divorce and his wife did this, that’s what he said,” Patel said.

According to police, the couple’s two children were also in the car and all three ran from the scene.

When officers tracked them down a few hours later, they told them they ran because they were scared.

“I’m not happy but I’ll have to deal with the situation even though I’m not responsible,” Patel said.

Just moments after the crash, several neighbors rushed to Patel’s side to comfort her.

“She’s okay, and her daughter and her son are in there, that’s the main thing but man, what a way to wake up,” Felicia Carrigo, who lives across the street, said.

Patel said it’s a stressful situation, especially because she’s a single mom and has a high deductible.

“They need to fix this. I mean, I don’t have time and money, both. I have three kids to raise,” Patel said.

The driver was issued a ticket for leaving the scene of an accident.
