PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A 33-year-old police officer is recovering after being shot several times when he was ambushed by a gunman.
“This is absolutely one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross. “This could have easily been a police funeral.”
Authorities say 33-year-old Officer Jesse Hartnett was driving in a marked cruiser in Philadelphia when 30-year-old Edward Archer walked up to the car and opened fire.
While firing multiple rounds into the car, police say Archer walked closer until he was actually firing from inside the driver’s side window.

Amazingly, Hartnett was able to return fire after being shot three times in the left arm. Authorities say he shot Archer in the buttocks, who was apprehended a short distance away.
Hartnett was able to call for help through his police radio.
“I’m bleeding heavily!” he said.

Hartnett underwent his first surgery, but doctors believe he will need multiple surgeries to repair the damage.
“This guy tried to execute the officer,” Ross said. “I don’t know how this officer survived.”
Officials say Archer “confessed to committing this cowardly act in the name of Islam” and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
On Friday, Ross said Archer’s weapon was a police firearm that was stolen from a home in 2013.
