OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma City man was arrested for abuse by a caretaker after officers allegedly found a man living in filth.
On Wednesday, officers drove to an apartment complex after someone called to see if they could check on a man who lived inside one of the units.
When authorities found the victim, they say he appeared “very emaciated” and they could “smell [an] odor of feces coming from inside the apartment.”
According to the arrest affidavit, officers found dirty toilet paper on the floor, human feces on the floor and walls and a bucket full of human waste.
Police say there was no food in the apartment and the utilities had been turned off at some point.
Also, the report claims the ceiling in the bathroom had collapsed from a water leak and saturated the floor with water.
As investigators were looking around the apartment, they met 29-year-old Jonathan Benfield.
According to the affidavit, Benfield told police that two children also lived in the apartment and that he was one of the people responsible for taking care of the victim.
Benfield was arrested on complaints of public intoxication and caretaker engaging in abuse or neglect.
