OKLAHOMA CITY – It can be a hassle to bring children into a grocery store, but authorities say you should never leave them alone in a car, especially with the temperatures rising.

On Monday evening, officers were called to the Walmart parking lot along I-240 after a man reported seeing two young children in a locked car.

According to the arrest affidavit, the man said that he spotted the 1-year-old and 2-year-old children in the backseat of a van with the windows rolled up.

Police say it was 84 degrees outside the vehicle and the children were “sweating profusely.”

Officers took the victims’ mother, 20-year-old Renee Mayfield, into custody as EMSA took the children to a nearby hospital to be evaluated.

According to the affidavit, Mayfield told officers that the children’s father was supposed to be sitting with them in the car. However, police say the victims’ father was out-of-state at the time.

Mayfield was arrested on one count of child neglect.
