OKLAHOMA CITY – If you have ever been pregnant or if you’ve ever lived with a pregnant woman, you know there’s a long list of do’s and don’ts for expectant mothers: soft cheese, lunch meat and even sushi.

So, imagine being pregnant and wrestling with the choice to undergo chemotherapy for cancer treatment.

Tuesday night at 10 p.m., NewsChannel 4’s Ali Meyer has the story of mothers who have faced down that very decision.

Ryan and Amanda Meyer tried for three years to have a baby.

They wanted nothing more.

But, just a few weeks after they found out they were pregnant, they got the worst news ever: terminal colon cancer, stage four.

Meyer’s oncologist recommended terminating the pregnancy.

“We were given the warnings: Could have birth defects. Could have this. Could have that,” Ryan said.

They chose to fight against the cancer, alongside their unborn baby.

“I looked at (the doctor) and I’m like, if you’re going to tell me to terminate this pregnancy, it’s not going to happen,” Amanda said. “We have wanted this baby for so long.”

Amanda pushed ahead with chemo treatments and with major surgery to remove the cancerous cyst on her colon.

“I was so scared that I was going to wake up and be told I was no longer pregnant anymore. The minute I woke up from surgery I asked ‘Am I still pregnant? Can I hear her heartbeat please?'”

Tuesday at 10 p.m. on KFOR-TV, hear from Amanda on the excruciating decision to endure chemotherapy while carrying her unborn baby and more from cancer experts about a new trend in caring for pregnant cancer patients.
