A basketball team from a private school in Waco, Tex. asked their fans to do something that, at first, seemed a bit peculiar.

They asked some of their fans not to cheer for them.

When Vanguard College Prep found out that they were playing the Gainesville Tornadoes, a correctional facility basketball team, their reaction wasn’t what you might expect.

“It just seemed weird… It just didn’t seem right,” Vanguard player Hudson Bradley said.

What was their concern? The other team didn’t have enough fans.

“Our fan base was close to zero,” one Gainesville player said.

“My parents came to one game, but they didn’t come to the other ones because they didn’t have time,” another Gainesville player said.

So before their home game against Gainesville, two of the Vanguard players asked their fans to cheer for the Tornadoes instead.

When they arrived to the field house, the Gainesville players had no idea what was going on. They were surrounded by cheering fans, signs of support, and even their own cheerleaders.

“As it went on, everybody just kind of got so into it everyone was cheering for them,” Hudson said. “Every time they scored, the gym was just lit up with cheering and clapping and everyone was on their feet.”

“I think, in a way, this is how sports should be. It just kinda shows you the real impact encouragement and support for anybody can make.” Hudson said.

In fact, the Gainesville players were so appreciative that they agreed this was an experience they will never forget.

“When I’m old man, I’m just gonna be thinking about this,” one Gainesville player said.

“I’ll probably remember this for the rest of my life,” another Gainesville player said.
