HAMDEN, Conn. – When an 88-year-old Connecticut woman opened her door to let her cat in a raccoon followed her inside.

According to NBC Connecticut, the raccoon attacked her while she petted it, thinking it was her cat.

The raccoon bit her elbow, hand, forearm, lip and chin, police said.

“She’s a tough old bird,” said the victim’s son, Malcolm McKernan. “She fought it off and was able to call on the phone. That’s pretty remarkable.”

The raccoon also charged at two officers when they arrived on scene.

Police were able to get the raccoon outside, where the animal was euthanized.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where she was treated and released.

The elderly woman spoke to NBC Connecticut at her home Monday and said she was doing well.
