OKLAHOMA CITY – Race fans are bringing the State Fair Speedway back to life.

Sunday, State Fair Speedway fans had the OKC Racer Reunion at Pole Position Raceway on N.W. 36th and May.

This is their sixth annual reunion.

Last year, more than 250 people attended.

The reunion showcased vintage race cars and motorcycles outside.

Inside there was racing memorabilia, photo albums, model cars, videos and go-kart racing.

For decades, the State Fair Speedway was a hot spot, but recently it was torn down.

“You know we all lost something that we felt like was a part of us,” ex-driver Shane Carson said.

So now fans and drivers have rerouted their sport, ending up at Pole Position for a reunion.

At the reunion, fans remembered what it was like to watch drivers fly past that checkered flag.

“They’re really good,” racer Alison Slaton said.

Slaton, whose mother died two years ago, says racing is a way to keep the family close.

“I know she’s always with me at every single race,” Slaton said.

She says that was clear after her first race.

“I won my first race last year on exactly a year from when she passed away,” Slaton said.

Now she’s looking for funding for her next season so she can do what she loves.

“I like beating all the boys,” Slaton said.

Carson says even though Alison and others like her won’t be able to hit the old track, he’s happy the sport lives on.

“They still care about the sport and they still care about the history of the Fairgrounds Speedway, and I for one still miss it,” Carson said.
