BRIDGETON, N.J. (CNN) – Many pet owners will tell you that their four-legged friends are a part of their family and community.

A dog owner in New Jersey believes that is true but wasn’t prepared for what arrived in the mail.

At first glance of a jury summons, Barrett Griner was shocked by the name on the letter.

It said IV Griner was due in court.

Griner said, “No one in our house is IV other than the German Shepherd.”

Her name on her vet record appears the same as on the summons.

When Barrett received the summons, he figured it out right away.

His full name is Barrett Griner IV, which is why he named her IV.

It turns out the Cumberland County judiciary coordinator says the computer generated jury summons misplaced the Roman Numeral for Barrett’s first name and mailed it out.

Griner said, “I had to laugh at it.”

While the 5-year-old German Shepherd won’t be sitting in the jury box anytime soon, at least Barrett has a tale to tell and the records to back it up.
