SMYRNA, Tenn. –  A U.S. Navy Blue Angels jet crashed Thursday afternoon, the Navy public affairs office at the Pentagon said.

The Blue Angels had been in the Smyrna, Tennessee, area on Thursday, according to the flight demonstration squadron’s Twitter account.

The public affairs office did not say anything about the pilot’s fate.

However, WTVF reports that one person was killed in the crash.

An hour later, ABC News received confirmation that the pilot died in the crash.

Officials with the Rutherford County EMS said the crash occurred during a practice flight, adding that they believe only one jet was involved.

According to the Tennessean, a fireball and thick black smoke could be seen just past the runway of the Smyrna Airport.
