WASHINGTON (NBC) – According to NBC, Attorney General Eric Holder is planning to announce his resignation from the post on Thursday.

An official with the Justice Department confirmed to NBC that Holder will stay on the job until a successor is confirmed.

Holder, the first African-American to hold the position of attorney general, is among just a handful of cabinet officials who have remained in their posts since the beginning of Barack Obama’s presidency.

He became a target for Congressional Republicans, who have pushed for his dismissal over the Fast and Furious gun operation and the IRS targeting scandal.

His resignation comes after nearly six years on the job.
