WESLEY GROVE, Fla. (CNN) – Police say a retired police officer is now in custody after he allegedly shot a man and a woman inside a movie theater after the man was texting on his phone during the previews.
Officers rushed to the Wesley Grove Movie Theater on Monday afternoon after receiving a call about a gunman inside the theater.
Witnesses say they were sitting in their seats, preparing to watch ‘Lone Survivor’ when a pair of customers started arguing.
Officials say it all started because the victim was texting on his cell phone during the previews.
Authorities say 71-year-old Curtis Reeves, a retired Tampa police officer, was at the theater with his wife when 43-year-old Chad Oulsen began texting on his phone.
Reeves asked him a few times to turn off his phone but Oulsen decided to finish his text message.
Reeves then went to ask an employee to ask Oulsen to put away his phone.
Sheriff Chris Nocco, with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, said, “At that time, Curtis then returns to his seat. Chad Oulsen then starts confronting him verbally, starts saying, ‘Oh, did you go in there and start complaining on me? Did you tell the staff about me? This verbal altercation starts getting louder. During that altercation, went from verbal to a physical altercation. The suspect, Curtis Reeves, pulls out a gun.”
Witnesses say Nicole Oulsen, the victim’s wife, saw the gun and put her hand in front of her husband.
Reeves fired one round, which hit Nicole and Chad.
Charles Cummings said, “Their voices started going up. There seems to be almost a confrontation. Somebody throws popcorn. I’m not sure who threw the popcorn, then ‘bang’ shot. He staggered two seats over and fell on my son and I. I asked my son to go call 911, which is what he did.”
Chad Oulsen died of his injuries.
His wife, Nicole, is recovering in the hospital.
Reeves was arrested on second-degree homicide.
Reeves is being held without bond.
