OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma museum is offering free admission Tuesday in honor of a major grant announcement.

The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation contributed a $12 million grant towards Science Museum Oklahoma’s capital campaign.

Over the past five years that foundation has invested over $22 million in Oklahoma through Science Museum Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Museum Network.

This large contribution kicks off the museum’s $25 million capital campaign.

The capital campaign will focus on Phase 1 of the master plan which includes an exhibit designed for families with young children, a new main entrance and lobby and exterior improvements.

The entire project is scheduled for completion by summer 2015.

According to museum staff, the new exhibit will essentially be a “children’s museum” within the museum.

The focus will be on children 3 to 6 years of age but the exhibit will feature multiple layers of activities designed to educate and inspire the entire family.

At 21,000 square feet, the exhibit rivals the size of most children’s museums in the nation.

The second major component of the project includes a new main entrance and lobby.

Museum officials said these areas will be relocated to the west third of the building and will easily accommodate families and large school groups.

Exterior improvements such as improved parking and enhanced landscaping will complete  the project.
