GRAND ISLE, La. – Family members are praying for a swift recovery after a woman was run over by a police officer while sunbathing with a friend on the beach.

Lindsey Gordon, 24, has been undergoing multiple surgeries since she was run over by a pickup truck driven by a Grand Isle police officer on Thursday afternoon.

Gordon suffered a shattered pelvis and internal bleeding during what should have been just another day at the beach.

“They had just got there and laid down, and my daughter was the one who saw him coming and she screamed. Like I said, the other girl rolled out-of-the-way, but she didn’t have time to move out-of-the-way and the truck was on her, you know, ran over her,” Suzanne Baggett, Gordon’s mother, told WVUE.

Authorities say the truck was driven by Officer Norris Esponge, who is now under investigation.

“I just don’t see how he could not see them laying there,” Baggett said.

The Grand Isle Police Department says Esponge has been cooperating with investigators and is now on administrative leave.

State troopers say they don’t believe he was intoxicated before the accident.
