The incident happened in the area of East Farrall Street and South Minnesota Avenue.
“It’s terrifying,” said Janet Brown, who lives nearby. “We’re scared of this. I’ve been here 25 years and I don’t want to be here anymore.”
According to Vivian Lozano, Corporal and PIO for Shawnee Police, the department got several calls about the suspect Wednesday afternoon.
“Officers received a call at about 2:19 p.m. of a male walking down the street pointing guns at vehicles,” said Lozano.
She says police then rushed to the scene, made contact with the suspect, who pointed a gun at officers.
“And shots were fired,” said Lozano.
Timothy Evans, who also lives in the area told KFOR he was outside doing yard work as the incident was unfolding.
“All of the sudden, I heard ‘Zing Zing’ like in the air,” said Evans. “There were about seven or eight gunshots that went off.”
The suspect died at the scene. No one else was injured.
Neighbors say the suspect would hang out in the area often. They told KFOR they believe he was in his thirties.
As of 10 p.m., on Wednesday, the suspect’s identity has not been released.
“If someone’s waving a gun around, you know, they got to do something,” said Brown. “But you know, it’s sad. It’s sad what happened to the guy it really is and I’m sorry for his family.”
