SWEETWATER, Okla. – Leaking oil from a broken valve caused a small explosion and fire in an oil field east of Sweetwater around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Beckham and Roger Mills County deputies set up a 1-mile perimeter east of Sweetwater and closed State Highway 152 and Crossroad 1110 while Sweetwater Fire Department handled the blaze.

According to the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office, the fire started after a broken valve spewed oil on an electrical line.

Although homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution, no injuries were reported. SH 152 and CR 1110 were open as of 2:30 a.m.
