OKLAHOMA CITY — Our personal information is under attack. Now scam artists are using local banks and your cell phone to try to lure you in.
The strategy is call “SMiShing,” named after SMS or text message phising.
In this case, without hacking into any database, thieves picked a bank in Hennessey, and a prefix for Kingfisher and started sending texts stating “YOUR CARD HAS BEEN DEACTIVATED.”
They left a local number in the text for “customers” to call back and waited to see who would fall for it.
Elaine Dodd with the Oklahoma Bankers Association said, “They are doing it by text message now because they think it will make them look like a trusted partner.”
At first someone answered the fake number as if they were the bank.
It’s disconnected now but not before someone was able to get debit card and pin numbers from a few trusting customers.
Dodd said they believe these same thieves used the same scam recently in Michigan and Arkansas.
They warn Oklahomans to be careful.
Remember, your bank will never contact you through e-mail, text or a call to ask for your personal information.

He said when it comes to banks, “They already know those things. They already have those things. They have that information when you opened up your account. There is no reason for them to call and specifically request that information from you.”
Dodd said, “It’s just up to all of us to stay alert and aware and not ever give out your private information. Double check. Call your bank. Talk to that smiling face you can trust.”
