MIDWEST CITY, Okla. -- Firefighters responded to the scene of a police standoff early Wednesday morning, after authorities say the suspect set his apartment on fire.

The fire prompted evacuations of nearby apartment units.

It started at the Calico Corner Apartments in the 2200 block of Felix Place in Midwest City.

About 10 p.m. Tuesday night police responded to a disturbance call at the suspect's apartment.

Neighbors reported hearing a man screaming and breaking glass.

When police arrived they found the man had barricaded himself inside his apartment with a rifle, refusing to come out, and threatening to shoot.

After the two-hour-long standoff, police convinced the suspect to give up and come out.

However, police say, the suspect tried to destroy his apartment by lighting it on fire before he gave himself up.

"All i know is it was set within the apartment prior to him exiting it and that it was contained to the apartment. Once he came out he was taken into custody. The fire department was standing by a short distance away. They responded and quickly put it out. We had it under control in a short period of time" said Captain Bill Howard of the Midwest City Police Department.

Damage from the fire was contained to a single unit.

The suspect was arrested and uninjured.
