BEAVERTON, Ore. – Clara Nichols was feeling helpless.
“It felt like home, until they came in and now it’s all gone,” Nichols told KATU. “It don’t feel like home no more.”
The 87-year-old lives on Social Security and rent for her apartment already accounted for half of that income.
KATU reports that Nichols has even resorted to skipping meals to make ends meet at times.
“I have to,” she said. “How do I make it otherwise?”
Recently, she learned that a new company purchased her apartment complex and that her rent would be going up- way up.
Since 1989, Nichols has lived in the same apartment but she just learned that her rent would jump from $775 each month to $1,250 at the end of June.
Amazingly, strangers heard about her plight and came to her aid.
A GoFundMe account raised more than $17,000 to help her stay in the apartment or help with moving expenses.
