GALVESTON, Tex. – Police have only one suspect in the disappearance of Virginia college student Hannah Graham, and they took him into custody on Wednesday.

Jesse Matthew skipped town before police in Virginia had enough probable cause to arrest him.

Officers say he’s the last person to have seen Hannah Graham, a University of Virginia student who went missing almost two weeks ago.

Surveillance video captured the 32-year-old at a convenience store more than 1,000 miles away from home.

“He was asking me the question that it’s safe to say on the beach or nothing. I told him, ‘Yeah, it’s good over there,” said Dave Paresh, the store owner.

Police say they found him camping out on a beach in Galveston, Texas.

“We don’t, at present, have any information as to what might have prompted Mr. Matthew to head to that part of the country,” said Chief Timothy Longo, with the Charlottesville Police Department.

Before Matthew left town, he had voluntarily visited a police station in Charlottesville over the weekend.

Detectives learned nothing from him about Graham’s disappearance.

Instead, they say he asked for and spoke to a lawyer before leaving.

“The family and I are, nobody are making any statements at this point in time. We might later on, but right now we are not,” said James Camblos, Jesse Matthew’s attorney.

With Graham still missing, police continue to ask for help.

They have received hundreds of tips but there’s still no sign of the 18-year-old.

On Thursday, Matthew was denied bond pending his extradition to Virginia.

During the court appearance, Matthew decided not to have a court-appointed attorney fight his extradition or a charge from Galveston County of giving false information to a peace officer.
