STATEN ISLAND N.Y. - An alleged gang member who allegedly shot a firefighter in Staten Island posted to Facebook during an ensuing standoff predicting his death.
“Today I die,” Tyree Garland, posting as Garland Tyree, wrote.
The message garnered several comments from concerned friends asking what was going on and urging him to be safe.
Investigators said Garland is a reputed member of the Bloods gang who has 18 prior arrests, WPIX reports.
He died Friday after gunshots erupted near the home where he barricaded himself, ending a six-hour standoff, police said.
The standoff began when U.S. Marshals arrived to Garland's home early Friday to serve him a federal probation warrant.
But Garland allegedly refused to open the door, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.
After authorities obtained a key to Garland's apartment, they opened the door and saw smoke.
Officials then called for the fire department.
Two fire department sources told WPIX that a fight ensued between the man and a fire lieutenant after the man refused to leave the home.
That is when the man allegedly shot the lieutenant twice - once in the calf and once in the buttocks.
The man then reportedly barricaded himself inside the basement of the apartment.
Armed SWAT teams spent hours trying to coax Garland out of the basement.
Officials did confirm with WPIX that Garland is dead, but further details about his death were not immediately known.
The lieutenant was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
