DES MOINES, Iowa (WITI) – When it comes to a child’s birth, many parents want to be present when a baby comes into the world.

However, that is not always possible.

Sgt. John Vorrath, with the National Guard, was deployed with his unit in the Middle East when he got word his wife was going into labor.

He was able to watch the birth of his daughter via an iPad.

But he knew it wasn’t the same.

He surprised his wife by getting permission from his superiors and flying home.

After 22 hours, Vorrath landed and rushed to the hospital.

His wife was caught completely off guard and Vorrath was overcome with emotion when he met his daughter.

His 2-year-old son was also surprised after arriving at the hospital a few minutes later.
