GEORGIA – A teen has received thousands of dollars after releasing a shocking video of his family’s violent reaction after the teen told them he was gay.
19-year-old Daniel Pierce, of Georgia, revealed who he was to his parents in the hope that they would accept him for who he is.
Pierce told the BBC, “I recorded the video because I knew something was going to happen and wanted to protect myself in case I was harmed in any way.”
And he was right.

In the video you hear Pierce discussing his sexuality with his family.
You can hear his family calling him a "disgrace," moments before the intervention got violent.
According to the Advocate, Pierce's aunt confirmed the video's authenticity.
She also confirmed to the Advocate that he was punched in the mouth during the argument.
BBC reports that Pierce posted the video on YouTube later that evening.
"I wanted to prevent this from happening to as many people as possible," Pierce told BBC.
In a matter of days, the video received millions of hits and his named became a hashtag on social media.

One of Pierce's followers set up a page to help Pierce with living expenses.
Now, the GoFundMe campaign has raised thousands of dollars.
But Pierce has other plans for the money. He says he plans to donate money to help the LGBTQ youth homeless crisis.
