A 10-week-old puppy has been the victim of abuse.

The accused is now in jail, while the puppy is recovering in the care of a local rescue.

The Bella Foundation's Traci Neasbitt said, "He's a little bit wobbly still, so that may be a sign of a little brain swelling."

The little Boxer-Shepherd mix has had a pretty rough week, though thankfully he is now in good hands.

Neasbitt said, "He's got a skull fracture and a pretty severe gash on the side of his mouth."

The puppy was taken from an Oklahoma City apartment complex after police said he was abused at the hands of 39-year-old Deneoval Derrick.

OKC Police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said, "The officer mentioned initially they thought there had been some sort of attack, that the dog had been attacked by another animal."

Police received an anonymous call reporting the abuse.

Wardlow said, "When our officers arrived, they could hear a noise that sounded like a cage being thrown around."

Upon investigation they determined this was a case of animal abuse.

Derrick was arrested and the dog turned over to animal welfare but his journey wasn't over.

Neasbitt said, "The shelter was obviously not a good place for him because he needed long-term care."

That's where Traci Neasbitt with the Bella Foundation came in.

She said, "With this guy, I think he was just lucky that there was someone else there that saw and could call and get him the help he needed."

She said it appears the dog may have been kicked in the face; his mouth is gashed open, several teeth are missing and his skull is fractured.

While he does wobble a little when he walks, Neasbitt said his outlook is pretty good.

She said, "He seems very happy so as far as emotional trauma, I don't think he'll have much."

We do know the suspect was just recently released from prison after serving 14 years related to child abuse.

As for the puppy, once he's healthy he will be available for adoption through the Bella Foundation.
