MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — A navy commander based at Tinker Air Force Base was fired Tuesday. The Navy is citing ‘loss of confidence in the commander’s ability to lead’.

The commander was in charge of training navy personnel responsible for communicating nuclear information.

“I figured you could trust them all, in the military that high up,” a Midwest city citizen said.

But that was not the case, according to a navy investigation that found Captain Heather Cole.

“Had not performed up to the high standards demanded of an officer in command,” a press release said.

“Some people shouldn’t be leaders,” a veteran said, not surprised. “Not that big, it happens all the time.”

Others were surprised, saying, “They’re there to help secure this area, secure the country, and I guess for that kind of information to get out, it would be pretty bad.”

The Navy is not releasing details about the investigation. What we do know is that she was a commander of Strategic Communications Wing 1 and Task Force 124 at Tinker Air Force Base.

“When something goes awry, I think that’s part of it, is putting in new leadership and just moving on,” another person said.

Captain Cole has not been kicked out of the Navy, she has been temporarily re-assigned pending the release of the final investigation.

The investigation is still ongoing.
