Louisville, Ky. – A man fell from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship off the coast of Mexico and was stranded in the water for hours with no help in sight.

Fortunately, passengers on a nearby cruise ship spotted him and saved his life.

On Thursday morning, a 22-year-old man fell from the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Sea into the waters off the coast of Cozumel.

Heather and Adam Felton had no idea about the man’s misfortune.

Instead, they were busy taking care of their daughter, 13-month-old Katherine.

“She doesn’t understand time change, she doesn’t understand sleeping in on vacation,” said Heather.

The couple and their daughter were on the 10th deck of a Disney cruise ship when they heard something strange.

“We were taking pictures of her, and then we both kind of heard something,” Heather said. “We were the only people out on the deck. It was early enough that we didn’t see anybody else, and so we heard it a second time.”

“I ran out towards the edge of the boat and I looked down and someone’s going right by, yelling for help,” said Adam.

Adam stayed with the baby as Heather, a doctor, went for help.

“I took off running to try to get somebody else’s attention,” she said.

She saw crew members on the deck below, who stopped the boat and turned it around to rescue the man.

“We were scared that we were the last people to see this man alive,” said Adam.

30 minutes later, the man was on board.

“The odds of him being rescued, being seen. It was a little too much. I know Heather got emotional,” said Adam.

“If she hadn’t gotten up early and we hadn’t decided to take a walk first, there were a lot of things that put us there,” Heather said.

Authorities say the man not only survived a major fall from the ship, but was in the water five hours before he was rescued.
