HOUSTON – A woman who promised to marry herself if she didn’t find love by the time she turned 40, married herself earlier this month in a lavish ceremony.

According to the Houston ChronicleYasmin Eleby married herself on January 3 in an extravagant ceremony with 10 bridesmaids, plus family and other guests in attendance.

Since marrying yourself isn’t legal, Eleby’s ordained sister performed the ceremony at the Houston Museum of African American Culture.

“Once she hit 40 she figured if she didn’t find someone who loved her as much as she did, she would marry herself,” John Guess Jr., the CEO of the Houston Museum of African American Culture, told the Houston Chronicle.

He also agrees with Eleby’s idea that loving yourself for who you are before loving someone else is the key to happiness.

“It doesn’t hurt her that she’s now indicated to others that she has high standards,” Guess Jr. says.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Eleby, who works overseas in the oil and gas industry, has plans to visit Cambodia, Laos, and a jazz festival in Dubai for her honeymoon.
