DEL CITY, Okla. – Two copper thieves have been caught red-handed on the roof of a Del City strip mall. It happened around 4 a.m. Monday on top of the roof of the Gold’s Gym near S.E. 15th and Vickey.

“Officers were made aware of some air conditioner units on top of the buildings there that possibly had been tampered with,” said Capt. Bradley Rule with the Del City Police Department.

That’s why police decided to keep a close eye on the strip mall overnight Sunday into Monday morning.

“As they were watching the building, they saw two males climb what we believe to be a pipe and get on the roof of the building,” Rule said.

Once officers went onto the roof, they located the first suspect disassembling an air conditioning unit and gathering copper and arrested him.

The fire department was called in to help. They used a ladder to get the suspect back on the ground while they searched for his accomplice, thinking he may be hiding inside Gold’s Gym below.

“They continued the search of the roof and eventually found a second suspect hiding inside an AC unit that was on the roof,” Rule said.

Both suspects, Raymond Speaks and Quinten Cavnar, were arrested for copper theft and for having the tools to commit a burglary.

Police said they’ve seen an increase in copper theft in recent weeks.

“We hadn’t seen a whole lot here recently like we used to. But, here in the past maybe month or so, we’ve seen kind of a rise in it a little bit,” Rule said.
