EDMOND, Okla.-- Police say they have arrested two men for allegedly making homemade bombs and testing them inside an Edmond apartment.

One such experiment led to an explosion and fire at the complex Thursday evening.

Police say the suspects had been practicing making bombs when one backfired.

They say they were very lucky to catch them before anyone was injured.

James Hamm, Edmond Police Department, said,"They didn't have the size of bombs to wipe out buildings but the major threat was if the building caught on fire."

That's exactly what happened Thursday as fire crews responded to the complex at 101 N. Boulevard just before 5 p.m.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly but say with everything inside the building, it could have been much worse.

Hamm said, "The bomb techs said they were surprised the apartment did not burn down because there was evidence of char marks on every wall in that apartment."

Police arrested 18-year-old Casey Hampton for allegedly making and testing bombs inside the apartment.

They also arrested a second man, 21-year-old Hillrey Young, for assisting in the crime.

Hamm said, "I don't know how much he took part in manufacturing, but he knew what was going on and he never notified anybody about it."

Police don't know what the pair planned to do with the bombs, but it wasn't an isolated incident.

Neighbors reported hearing noises similar to fireworks in recent weeks.

Edmond police also received a call on Wednesday about a possible explosion but found no smoke or fire damage at that time.

Both suspects are facing charges of possessing explosive devices while Hampton may face an additional arson charge.
