OKLAHOMA CITY – What started as an investigation into a car accident turned into an arrest for alleged abuse in southeast Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City police were called to a home on Thursday night after 70-year-old Truman Dodson allegedly hit a fire hydrant and left the scene.

But officers weren’t prepared for what they allegedly found when they went to Dodson’s front door.

“Our officers arrived at this residence and knocked on the front door, and when the man opened the front door, they immediately smelled what they believe a strong odor of human waste coming from inside the house,” Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, said.

Officials searched the house finding what they call filthy living conditions.

They also discovered a woman in her early 60s covered in feces.

“There was a woman they found inside who appeared to have been neglected. They said she had scabs and sores on her eyes, just poor conditions. This lady apparently looked malnourished, very thin,” Wardlow said.

The victim, Dodson’s common law wife, was rushed to the hospital by EMSA. They say she was dehydrated, and suffering from dangerously low blood pressure.

It’s hard for neighbors to believe.

“They’re kind of quiet. They pretty much stay to themselves. She had a couple of accidents or falls, but outside of that nice, quiet neighbors,” Thomas Tucker said.

Neighbors say it doesn’t make sense.

“For Truman to do something of that nature, that’s hard to believe,” Tucker said.

Dodson is now in jail on a charge of abuse or neglect by caretaker.

A witness said the victim suffers from seizures and is now in protective services.
