NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Prayers are not allowed in many schools across the country so a Louisiana woman is taking prayers to the streets.

She prays with children at school bus stops to help them understand the power of prayer and how to lead a good life.

Students call her Ms. Angel because she is there for them when they need her.

She says she battled drugs and alcohol for 10 years of her life and is now working to make sure the next generation doesn’t follow her footsteps.

“We go to Higgins High School, Lincoln Elementary School, every school in the neighborhood, as many bus stops as we can get in one day,” she said.

Every morning, she heads to all the bus stops with apples and oranges and a word of advice for the students.

She calls it “bus stop prayers.”

While the kids eat a healthy snack before class, she tells the younger children Bible stories.

The older children, when ready, hear her story of drug abuse.

Ms. Angel says she hopes to give kids the support they need to not only get on the bus, but get A’s and report crime when they see it.

“We just had a killing on Martin Dr. day before yesterday, there was another one at Mike’s store, right here on the expressway. He was shot and killed,” she said. “I teach them how to go to the teacher or who they need to go to if such things are happening in their community,” she added.

Ms. Angel is not alone in her mission.

Other supporters have joined her cause, saying they hope the younger generations learn from them instead of what they see on the streets.

“We grew up watching our brothers, who were gang-banging. When my niece and nephew grow up, they’re going to grow up 10 times stronger because we put 10 times more into the community,” said one supporter.
