AUSTRALIA — Mel Rymill has started a social media movement for moms who are proud of their bodies… Bodies that, for whatever reason, are not easily accepted by the majority of society.
Rymill recently had a baby. She wanted to get back in shape, so she got a trainer.
The first thing the trainer said to Mel was, “Obviously you want to get back to your pre-baby weight.”
“And it pissed. Me. Off,” Rymill wrote in a Facebook post. “I corrected her nicely by simply saying “my goal is to regain my core strength and endurance…I’m not worried by how my body looks, only how it functions…it can be pretty badass.””
The trainer’s comment made her realize there will always be pressure about body image.
“Post pregnant women are told they look good if they return to their pre-baby body quickly leading to the assumption that they look bad if the keep the extra weight. Skinny people are envied for their lack of fat or shamed for apparently starving themselves. Voluptuous women are either labelled fat and shamed or they’re labelled brave for being comfortable in their own skin.”
And while Mel notes that “no one is comfortable in their own skin 100% of the time,” she decided to post a picture of herself in her “nana undies and bedtime nursing bra.”
She asked others to join her in celebration of their bodies, and it didn’t take long to catch on. While it started as a celebration of post-baby bodies, other women who have struggled with body issues also decided to join in.
