SANTA ANA, Calif. -  A would-be burglar had to be rushed to a California hospital after being shot with his own gun.

Erickson Dumanual says he was asleep in his home when two intruders entered his room and demanded valuables.

"The guy had a gun right at my head," Dumanual told KTLA.

At one point, the gunman turned his head and that's when Dumanual made his move.

"At that point, I went for the gun," he said.

Dumanual, who has trained in Krav Maga for seven years, was able to pin the man against a wall and take the man's gun away from him.

"All I want to do is make sure this guy doesn't hurt me, my family or anybody else," he said.

At one point, the gunman decided to go after him.

"I tried to tell him to stop, stop, stop, and he comes at me. I had to pull the trigger. I didn't want to kill him," Dumanual said.

Dumanual says he shot the man in the leg before pushing him into the swimming pool.

The suspect was taken into custody with non-life threatening injuries.

Dumanual was not injured.
