STILLWATER, Okla.- Authorities say one woman is dead after a head-on collision on a highway in Payne County.

Troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol say the accident happened just before 8 p.m. on U.S. 177, about six miles south of Stillwater.

Officials say 45-year-old Penny Mahan was driving the wrong way on the highway when she hit a car head-on.

Mahan’s car rolled one time and came to a stop in the center of the highway.

The other vehicle spun off the road.

Mahan was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The three people inside the other vehicle were transported to an area hospital with various injuries.

Investigators say they are still looking into why Mahan was driving north in the southbound lanes.
