It’s against the law to sell a car with an open safety recall, but it’s not against the law to rent you one.
So while cars may have been recalled for safety issues, some rental companies are still allowing drivers to rent those cars and take them out onto the streets.
In order to make sure that you’re renting a safe car, experts say you should check the VIN (vehicle identification number) — the 17-digit code generally printed at the bottom corner of your vehicle’s dash on the driver’s side — before you drive it.
Enter the VIN at safercar.gov to quickly learn whether the vehicle has an open safety recall.
