When he first came to Norman Baker Mayfield was more myth than man.

Due to transfer rules, Mayfield couldn't even tell Bob Stoops he wanted to be a Sooner after already enrolling at OU.

The Austin native was eventually forced to sit out last season, earning scout team player of the year and taking on a new role as team hype man.

“I tried to be somebody that could influence the attitudes on the sidelines, keep people positive and the energy going on the sidelines,” Mayfield said.  “That's something I pride myself on, energy, if you keep people’s energy up they play better.”

Mayfield hasn't even taken the field yet but he already knows all too well about the expectations that come with being a Sooner.

“I watched them growing up,” Mayfield said.  “I was a big Oklahoma fan.  That's how it should be expected around here.  But, also I'd probably say from high school, we won state championships and it was a demand that we were going to win.  So I'm used to having winning being the biggest thing around a town, so I'm excited.  It's obviously a bigger stage, but it's relative.”

You could say Baker Mayfield's career is anything, but by the books.

He basically showed up in Norman unannounced, hung out at the dorms and even won an intramural softball title all before joining OU's football team, but according to his head coach they just don't let anybody on the team.

“Maybe the strangest thing that's ever happened in my coaching career,” Bob Stoops, OU head football coach said.  “I was hearing the rumors that he was transferring to Oklahoma and I’ve never talked to the guy and, he's never called to ask if he could.  If I said no he might have been at a fraternity here playing yard ball.

I go to our first team meeting and after he introduces himself, so I said, ‘your Baker Mayfield,’ I had no idea.”
