Former Oklahoma City Barons head coach Todd Nelson will eventually become the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers for the 2014-15 season.
For the time being, Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish will take over as interim coach, before turning the team over to Nelson.
MacTavish gave no timeline about when Nelson would officially take over the team’s head coaching duties.
Nelson will be on an interim basis for the season.
The 45-year-old was in his fifth season in Oklahoma City and guided the Barons to playoff appearances in the previous four years.
The Oilers are last in the National Hockey League standings and have lost 15 of their last 16 games.
Gerry Fleming will become the Barons’ interim head coach for the rest of the season, he spent the last five years as an assistant in Oklahoma City.
